I was in the market for a solar birdbath fountain partly because I like the sound of splashing water. Also I know that birds are attracted to the sound of the water. I had several bird baths but they were not fountains and they seemed to attract mosquitoes so I wanted to go with a birdbath fountain this time.

My problem was how to power up the fountain and solar seemed to be the answer. Our local stores had very little selection, if any, so I turned to the net and after some time discovered a nice selection of solar birdbath fountain that where both decorative and inexpensive.

I’ve included some here to help with your search and suggest you visit their store. They have excellent guarantees and customer service.

Because I so enjoy a lot of birds around my garden and yard I have to be excited about the decorative bird house. bird feeder and bird bath. Usually as I’m surfing the net I stay on the look out for good sources of wild bird stuff and the other day I came across GenericGifts.com.

Now I am not trying to promote their online store but I was pleasantly surprised at their selection of decorative bird houses not to mention the prices. For instance this nicely detailed Love Shack was only $12.95 at the time I wrote this. Even if you are not currently looking for a sweet decorative bird house I would highly recommend a visit to their store; you should be as pleasantly surprised as I was.  Happy shopping and bird watching.

Here are some simple steps for making a really neat bird house kit for kids. Why? Kids seem to really like to watch birds and many even love to study them. By creating a bird house kit for kids parents can really encourage the youngsters to learn more about birds and how they live.

First, choose the material for the bird house. Wood is probably the easiest and fastest. Once an outline of the pieces are penciled out it is a wonderful time for older kids to get some experience with a hammer and saw.

Next, a fun plan is to put the pieces with some wood adhesive and nails in a box along with some instructions the youngster will understand and you have a bird house kit for kids.

Third, when the kids are ready to put the kit together have a small party. Once the kit is put together choose the color to paint the bird house. You may or may not want to make the paint, brushes and other finishing products part of the bird house kit for kids. When choosing a paint make sure it is an exterior grade paint.

Last but not least don’t forget the materials necessary to place the bird house once it is put together. A way to hang it (hooks, chain, or rope, etc.) or a pole to set it on may be included in the kit or done as part of the party.

Add a Touch of Education

Spend a little time on the computer and you can come up with some pictures of some of the common birds you see in your backyard. Create some flash cards with the pictures and a little information about the birds. Include these with the other materials and you have created a wonderful one of a kind bird house kit for kids.

Although it is possible to buy a lovely gourd bird house, they are also a simple type of birdhouse that nearly anyone can make including young children. This makes them an excellent project for the entire family as well as a wonderful addition to any backyard. With a little planning and a few simple tools a new gourd bird house will be ready for use by our flying friends.

Materials List

1) Obviously a large dried gourd.

2) Exterior spray paint or house paint. Decals or other decorations to add a bit of decoration also but try not to make it too brightly colored or flashy because it might scare off the birds rather than attract them.

3) An exterior sealer to help protect the gourd bird house from the elements once it is completed. A spray sealer works well for this.

Required Tools

1) A power drill and assorted drill bits

2) An eye screw and pliers

3) A scrubbing pad

4) A small headed spoon with a long handle or something similar to help scrape out the inside of the gourd bird house.

5) A dust mask

Making the Gourd Bird House

1) Prepare the gourd making sure it is dried out (shake it, it should rattle) and clean the outside with the scrubbing pad. Obviously make sure the gourd is big enough for birds to nest in.

2) Experiment with how you would like to have the gourd hang. At an angle, from the end (a good idea) or flat and determine where the eye screw should go to produce the desired result. Use the pliers and insert the eye screw.

3) Determine where you want the hole to be. A little above center is usually good and make it big enough for the type of bird you are looking to attract. A gourd bird house is perfect for the smaller birds like sparrows or finches.

4) Drill the hole into the gourd. Make sure you wear a mask because any mold or seed dust from the gourd may not but can cause respiratory problems if you inhale too much of it.

5) Also drill three small holes in the bottom for water drainage. This is an important and often overlooked step.

6) After drilling the hole clean out the inside of the gourd. Try to avoid using moldy gourds but if you get one just put a little more effort into the cleanout process. Never use any type of chemical to clean the inside of the gourd, they birds will not be happy with you if you do.

7) Paint and decorate the gourd bird house to your taste remembering it is as much for your visual pleasure as it is a home for the birds. The use the sealer to protect it from the sun and rain over time.

8) Hang and enjoy.

Making a gourd bird house is a fun and simple project that the whole family can enjoy for years to come. And the birds will appreciate the effort your family makes to provide them with a new home unlike any other gourd bird house.
